Chu Hongchang(zh-ts|t=朱洪章|s=朱洪章; Pinyin: , : Styled ; Posthumous name: (1820? – , 1895)born in Liping CountyGuizhou , was an eminent Han Chinese official, military general,late Qing Dynasty in China. He join the Xiang Army to fight effectively against the Taiping Rebellion and restored the stability of Qing Dynasty, and was one of nine generals(1 lieutenant General, 5 major generals, 3 Brigadier generals ) lead main forces 60,000 occupied the Nanjing in 1864, commander Zeng Guoquan choiced Chu is third class merit of recovery Nanjing in nine generals, and reported to Beijing‘s government praised him, but another opinions thought Chu should be the first merit not Li Chenden‎.

Led first wave offensive

19 July afternoon 13:00, the attackers detonated the explosives in the tunnel under Taiping (太平) Gate, the wall breaking fly 2--10 km far down, Chu led 1800 soldiers ran into shout: [Kill(Sa)! Kill(Sa)!....] loudly and combat from there broken wall into city, but KIA 460 before 16:00 o‘clock by weak but bravely Taiping remaines use bombs, but Chu‘s troop defeated Taiping till second day at last.

This merit gained the Imperial yellow jacket for Chu.

Why first merit not Chu ?

1.In Xiang Army, Chu was not Hunan person.

2.His family name Chu was same Ming Dynasty emperor, and Ming first emperor built former capital in Nanjing, Zeng Guoquan had Han Chinese ideology and not wish lose face for Han(Qing was non-Han).

3.Keep Some secret about Nanjing‘s treasure, so first and second class merit gave and praised knew secret generals.

4.He is too humble to selfish for himself.

5.Zeng‘s brothers feel discontented:Zeng Guofan appointed Chu follow Zeng Guoquan, but Zeng Guoquan don‘t forgiven eldest brother Zeng Guofan on some degree for elder brother was KIA in Battle of Sanhe, and blame Zeng Guofan‘s generals, included Chu.

In 1876, appointed Chu led army stationary on Tengchong CountyYunnan built hydraulic engineering.

Come back Nanjing

In 1888,Zeng Guoquan promoted Viceroy of Liangjiang, Chu followed Zeng again and came back Nanjing.

Climbing up Dragon's Neck

Someday they date to Climbing up Dragon's Neck(Dibao Castle 地保城, nicknamed Dragon's Neck 龙脖子on Purple Gold (紫金) Mountain) together that battleground memory for too much intense warfare 24 years ago. there were over 25,000 Xiang Army KIA over here among 20 months.

Tears full their eyes when they saw the sight and thought about deaths and wounds bravely. they writed and carved words on stone grave over here diary for this battle history and heros.

After 2 years, Zeng Guoquan was dead.

Defend Shanghai:on First Sino-Japanese War

Chu led 10,000 army defend Shanghai, Qing government sight Chu is a trump card. Japanese army and spy knew Chu was commander, fear him and not dare combat from Shanghai. but when Chu knew warfare was loss in Korea, it made old Chu too sadness and die(some historian think was murdered by Japanese spy!), Chu‘s typical military spirit was memorial forever.
