- Terry Razon Copa Filipina
The Terry Razon Copa Filipina is the showcase tournament of the National Capital Region Football Association (NCRFA) featuring the top Metro Manila clubs and teams, which are among the best in the country.
The event serves as the highlight in the NCRFA football calendar, drawing the best teams from the association that battle it out for honors in three divisions: First, Second and Third Divisions.
Teams in the First Division are the “elite,” and the competitions here provide a vehicle for squads and teams that would not have the chance to play against each other such as the powerhouse varsity sides of the UAAP and the NCAA like arch foes Ateneo and De La Salle. The Division also has other crack teams like Air Force and Navy and and prominent private clubs such as Kaya FC and Loyola FC, ensuring high caliber football action every time they take to the pitch.
Thanks to the Terry Razon Copa Filipina, football interest has been rekindled in Metro Manila that for the first time in local soccer history, an association has been forced to form three divisions to open the event for more club and team participation.
To make the competition even keener, the NCRFA leaders have laid the groundwork for teams to be promoted and demoted depending on their performance in each division, just what the English and South Americans have been doing.
The Terry Razon Copa Filipina is named in honor the late football patron Terry Razon-Gonzales, who was an avid soccer parent and mother of former national standout Frederick "Freddie" Razon-Gonzales.
While the tournament is marking it third year, the event actually is the continuation of the highly successful championships organized by the NCRFA such as the Samsung Cup and the Globe Super Cup stretching back to the mid-nineties.
The Terry Razon Copa Filipina, and its predecessors, has drawn the cream of the country’s football players, among them Freddie Gonzales, Aly Borromeo, Anton del Rosario and Chippy Caligdong, the captain of the current national team.
Because of it commitment to excellence, the NCRFA - Terry Razon Copa Filipina tournaments have become the ‘gold standard’ of how to run the game professionally in all aspects that many of its members and other organizers now emulate.
A festive yet competitive atmosphere marks the event’s matches, which often turn into family affairs as relatives, friends and supporters of the opposing sides witness their favorite players in action.
The Terry Razon Copa Filipina has helped renew and sustain football interest among sports fans in Metro Manila and now gets prominent space in leading newspapers such as the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin and the Philippine Star.
Given the growing popularity of the event, many reputable sponsors have decided to support the tournament: California Pizza Kitchen, 100 Plus Isotonic Drink, GNC Megamen, OSIM Massage Chairs, Stoked Inc., Thorlos, Beverly Hills Polo Club, Oakley, DHL Wide Wide World Express and Mizuno, among others.
