- Cristobal Dominguez
Cristóbal Domínguez was Born in April 5,1931. He arrived to Mar del Plata in 1959 holding the Chess National Master. By November same year represented Mar del Plata Federation at the Argentinian Championship.
He was three times Mar del Plata City Champion in 1960, 1961 and 1963. He was also part of the Mar del Plata Team in several National events, leading the team to the National Championship victory in 1961, and wining several times the acknowledged “Playas de Necochea.” Tournament.
For this brilliant victory (1964), the "Cronica" newspaper pointed out the Mar del Plata City chess players quality and the influence of Cristobal Dominguez in this achievement with these words:
Dominguez, Argentinean Master winner of the Bahia Blanca Tournament in 1960 is the main responsible for this renaissance of Mar del Plata chess. There was a time, 15 years ago, in which Mar del Plata results where poor, but a new generation, leaded by Dominguez, with some young men showing their quality to the local and national public has born. Players like Serra, Serfaty, Vasta, Brond, De Urquía, shown that progress and study policy, the search for perfection, which Dominguez leaded and directed has its results.
"Being one of the main characters on Mar del Plata chess he retired by middle 60's. But the sign he left on that young people was for sure his biggest contribution to local chess and stayed for a long time after his retirement.
Finally he went to Piriapolis, Uruguay with his family, his wife, Felicidad Margarita Polo and two children, Pedro and Manuel. He kept on chess activity but just for exhibitions.
He died at the age of 48 in 1979 affected by cancer.
Chess commission of a major cooperative credit Bank (Credicoop) organized a tournament with his name since April 1, 2000 and 8 yearly editions have been played until today. The biggest winner for this tournament has been Matias Dimuro with four wins.
