The exact origins of the band are unknown however it is thought that a group of friends so inspired by Mike Skinner's cover of Elton John's "Your Song" decided to record their own version with updated lyrics.
History
The first known performance by Champagne Circuit was in a flat above Lesters on Boundary Road, Portslade. The result was a culmination of an evening's consumption of alcohol, when it was decided to play Radio 1's Established 1967 CD, which includes a cover of Elton John's "Your Song" by The Streets. This inspired the band to pen their own lyrics to the song, which focussed on John's brother who had recently been sent to prison.
The video of this performance later appeared on youTube, it gained phenomenal success and at the time of writing has been viewed over 2,000 times. [cite news |title=Your Song: |date=2008-10-09 |url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsSeyaL2ZuQ&feature=related ]
