Israel Gohberg (
August 23 1928 ) is a Russian-bornmathematician , most known for his work inoperator theory andfunctional analysis , in particularlinear operator s andintegral equation s. Bishkek and theUniversity of Chişinău , did his doctorate atLeningrad University on a thesis advised byMark Krein (1954), andwent toUniversity of Moscow for ahabilitation degree.He joined the faculty at Teacher's college inSoroki , at theteachers college inBălţi before returning toChişinău where hewas elected into the Academy of Sciences and also being appointed head offunctional analysis atUniversity of Chişinău (1964-73).After moving toIsrael , Israel joinedTel Aviv University (1974) andwas at theWeizman Institute atRehovot . Since then he alsohad positions atVrije Universiteit inAmsterdam (1983),as well as atUniversity of Calgary andUniversity of Maryland, College Park .He founded the Integral equations and operator theory journal (1983).Awards
