Overview

Explorer Publishing is an independently owned publishing house, based in Dubai, that produces a range of guidebooks aimed at expats worldwide. Written by teams of local resident authors, Explorer’s main guidebook series is the Complete Residents’ Guide, which aims to provide insider information on working and living overseas. As of 2008, it publishes 24 Complete Residents’ Guides covering various cities, plus a number of Mini Visitors’ Guides and an extensive series of maps, mainly focused on the Middle East.

History

Established in 1995, Explorer Publishing was founded by Alistair Mackenzie. Frustrated by the lack of information on how to get the most out of life as an expat in Dubai, Mackenzie set about creating a book to answer all his questions about living, working and enjoying life in an unfamiliar city. This led to the publication of the Dubai Complete Residents’ Guide, covering typical red-tape scenarios, shopping, nightlife, sports and exploring. This was soon followed by a similar guide to Dubai’s sister emirate, Abu Dhabi, and eventually guides covering other GCC nations (Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar), as well as guides for off-road driving in the UAE and Oman, and a series of map products.

In 2007, Explorer extended their scope of coverage to other cities with large expat populations, such as Singapore, London, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Amsterdam and Shanghai.

Recent Developments

Following the re-launch of its website in 2008, Explorer introduced a communities section, allowing people to get in touch with other expats in their city.
