Neo Chimonio

Neo Chimonio or Neo Himonio, also with Cheimonio (Greek: Νέο Χειμώνιο), accented form: Néo Ch(e)imónio" and Néo H(e)imómio or Handrás is a village in the municipality of Orestiada in the northern part of the Evros Prefecture in Greece and is just 6 km south of the centre. Neo Chimonio is linked with the GR-51 (Alexandroupoli - Orestiada - Nea Vyssa - Ormenio) and a minor paved road with Mikri Doxipara. The area are mainly made up of hills and mountains, farmlands dominate the area. The municipal boundaries with Kyprinos is to the west, Trigono to the north and Didymoteicho to the south.

Location

Neo Chimonio is located about 14 km north of Didymoteicho, about 21 km south of Edirne, 5 km west km west of the Evros and the Turkish, north-northeast of Alexandroupoli and about 990 km northeast of Athens.

Population

History

It was annexed to Greece in 1920, prior it was ruled by the Ottomans. It became entirely Neo Cheimonio after the annexation, refugees flowed into the village and the Turkish population was displaced eastward. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt. Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s. The village's decline in population was the be a few in the municipality to gain its population.

Other

Neo Chimonio has a church, banks, and a square ("plateia"). Its school, gymnasium (middle school) and lyceum (secondary school) are in Orestiada.
