Walden Bello (born 1945) is a Filipino
author ,academic , and political analyst. He is aprofessor ofsociology andpublic administration at theUniversity of the Philippines , as well as executive director ofFocus on the Global South . Born inManila ,Philippines , he became a political activist following the declaration ofMartial Law by then-PresidentFerdinand Marcos onSeptember 21 ,1972 .Walden Bello is the founding director of
Focus on the Global South , a policy research institute based inBangkok ,Thailand . Prior to that he was executive director of theInstitute for Food and Development Policy (Food First ) inOakland ,California . Educated atPrinceton University , where he did his doctorate insociology in 1975, he subsequently taught at theUniversity of California, Berkeley , where he was a research associate with theCenter for South East Asian Studies .In 2003, Bello was awarded the
Right Livelihood Award , whose website describes him as "one of the leading critics of the current model of economicglobalization , combining the roles of intellectual and activist."
