John Freeman is a non-canon Half-Life character, the brother of Gordon Freeman in the story "Half-Life: Full Life Consequences.". He has gained some internet popularity due to the fanfiction by squirrelking in which he was introduced, a source of humor to millions for the extremely poor spelling, grammar, and general storytelling. This story has been made even more popular thanks to several dramatic readings posted on the internet and various videos lending further detail (often satirical) to the story. The most popular of these was done in Garry's Mod by djy1991. Over the course of the two stories he is featured in, John assists his brother in defeating monsters and aliens in Ravenholm, then avenges Gordon Freeman's death at the hand of 'the next boss'.

Character

John Freeman works at an unknown office with an unknown purpose. Freeman is shown to be typing on a computer while at work, but the nature of his work is unknown. It is unknown whether or not he works in the field of theoretical physics, like his brother Gordon Freeman, or if he is a scientist at all. The only clear things shown on his computer screen, if the [Garry's Mod] video is to be taken as a reliable source of information, are a command prompt and a G-mail account.

Several times he shows great proficiency on a motorcycle, accomplishing jumps, backflips, great speeds, and survives so much as jumping off a building while riding. He owns two different motorcyles, which he apparently keeps at the office, a lesser one on the roof and a superior (faster) one in the basement. He also shows the ability to accomplish great feats of acrobatics without a motorcycle, at one point flipping off the handlebars of his motorcycle while shooting zombie ghosts. He also shows skill in using various guns, utilizing perhaps four or five over the two-part story Full-Life Consequences to defeat enemies.

The only other possible tidbit of information about John Freeman before the story told in Full Life Consequences is through an e-mail he receives from his mother. It is implied that he and Gordon visit their mother for Thanksgiving dinner on an annual basis, though this is debatable. This further implies that he and Gordon, as well as he and his mother, are on good terms.

He is also known for his monologues, often giving very short speeches about how he feels and what he's thinking about to no one in particular, except perhaps the reader/viewer. In context of the story, this is seemingly done to create drama, tension, sorrow, or general emotion, but rarely comes out doing such.

He further seems incapable of running, and is always said to be walking towards his goals. In Full-Life Consequences, as he is almost always in a hurry, he is said to be walking 'really fast' multiple times. Why he can't run remains a mystery, though he appears to have overcome this by walking with great speed.

He is shown several times to be able to kill 'zombie ghosts' by traditional means, using sub machine guns and rocket launchers to defeat them. As both zombies and ghosts are traditionally thought to be immune to such weapons, how John Freeman is able to defeat them is a mystery.

His personality is often contradictory and muddled. On one occasion, he was shown to feel sorry for a group of zombie ghosts who could no longer live in their house, and took action to help them. On another, he knocked a nest of eggs out of a tree, and took the time to put them back safely. He is also shown to be close to his brother, assisting him when he is being attacked by aliens, and taking avenging Gordon's death extremely seriously.

On the other hand, he is on one occasion shown to be laughing as he fires a rocket at zombie ghosts. In the Garry's Mod video of Full-Life: Consequences, he is almost always shown with an odd smile/grin on his face as he fires his weapon. His method of helping the zombie ghosts that he felt sorry for was also controversial, choosing to blow up the house and kill the ghosts. This all leaves his true nature and personality unknown.

Half-Life: Full Life Consequences

John receives an email while working at his office on his computer. This starts his story, as the email from Gordon, asking for help in subduing aliens and monsters attacking 'his place'. (Later shown to be Ravenholm. It is not explained why Gordon Freeman resides here) John Freeman goes to the rooftop of the office, where one of his motorcycles is parked. After giving a monologue about the Freeman family name and what he feels is his duty thanks to it, John shows great motorbiking skills by ramping off the building and landing safely on the road below.

During his trip to Ravenholm, John notes the beauty of the countrysides around him, which appear to feature singing plants and birds and a sun falling from the sky. He also showcases the ability to drive at speeds several times more than what would be thought possible on a motorcycle, culminating in an implied speed faster than the speed of sound.

Due to this great speed, a hidden police car pulls him over to present a speeding violation ticket. However, John sees the policeman has been possessed by an alien headcrab. Why the headcrab-possessed policeman seems to go about his police duty as normal, going so far as to stop a speeding vehicle to give a ticket, is unknown. In fact, the possessed policeman even engages John in a short, but completely human and normal conversation. Regardless, John chooses to shoot the police officer in the head and continue on (though it is detailed earlier he has no weapon at this point.)

The journey culminates when John reaches a roadsign indicating he has reached Ravenholm, but almost loses his nerve on seeing writing below it claiming that 'he shouldn't come here'. In fact, he seems ready to leave before hearing Gordon Freeman scream.

Using a ramp to crash his motorcycle into a group of headcrab zombies in his path, John chooses to walk the rest of the way. On his way, he discovers a weapon laying on the ground. It is implied to be a sub-machine gun of some type, and the Garry's Mod video features the weapon as such.

With this new weapon, he fires on some zombies ghosts and commands them to leave, but takes pity on understanding that they live in a nearby house. His reaction to this is odd, blowing up the house and killing the zombie ghosts, appearing putting them 'at peace'.

Noting how ugly Ravenholm was compared to the countryside (no birds, dead 'pants', messy and bloody dirt from headcrabs), John speeds toward where he hears Gordon Freeman screaming again. He finds Gordon fighting the 'final boss'. In the story, no further name or description of this boss is given, though in the Garry's Mod video he is shown to be Dr. Wallace Breen with an expanded head. The fight is showcased to be Gordon repeatedly punching a non-responsive Breen, who merely stands there and flops around with the punches.

John assists Gordon by shooting out the boss's eyes, and Gordon finishes him with a final punch in the face. The brothers share a short conversation, Gordon jokingly telling John to get here earlier next time, sending both into laughter.

However, John notices something distressing in the sky, directing Gordon's attention to it. On seeing it, Gordon demands John leave quickly. Perhaps oddly, John does so, turning around in time to see Gordon get stepped on by 'the next boss'. John is shown to be extremely upset and swears vengeance on the boss.

Half-Life: Full-Life Consequences 2: What Has ToBe Done

John is shown to be hurrying back to his motorcycle, wishing to leave Ravenholm. However, after some time driving back towards his office, he runs out of gas. Jumping from the bike, he lands on 'dead people's hands', the details of which are left to the reader. In the Garry's Mod video, this is shown to be a collection of detached and bloody forearms on the ground. This causes him to further think about Gordon's death and his desire to defeat the 'next boss'.

Using a laser gun (acquired from what is assumed to be the side of the road), he shoots down a tree to test the functionality of the weapon. After knocking the tree over, he takes special care to replace a nest of eggs that had fallen out of the tree, wishing that the birds would not have to go 'see Gordon Freeman yet', clearly referring to the afterlife.

John walks the rest of the way back to his office, and uses his computer to find the 'next boss' on the internet. How or what he found is unknown, but he proclaims to now know his weakness. An email from his mother, asking how he is and requesting he and Gordon come home for Thanksgiving dinner, further saddens him and causes him to monologue about how he wishes Gordon to 'be happy soul'.

Going down to ground level this time, John boards his other motorcycle, apparently faster than the first one. Loading a Machine Gun, Laser Gun, and Rocket Gun (which was already placed on the motorcycle), John speeds through traffic back towards Ravenholm. He further showboats on his way, riding off-road and doing multiple backflips.

On reaching Ravenholm again, John sees more zombie ghosts. He implores them to move to the countryside so he would not have to kill them, remembering the last group of zombie ghosts he ran into. However, these ones show more violent tendencies, intending to kill John. John responds by shooting at the zombie ghosts before speeding off towards the 'next boss'. Taunting him by proclaiming that 'you will be one of us', the zombie ghosts are finally killed by a rocket from John.

Choosing this time to walk slowly (like a turtle) towards the 'next boss', John takes a seat on a rock from a distance. In the Garry's Mod video, the 'next boss' is a gigantic G-Man, his foot having stepped on and crushed Gordon with ease. In the story itself, no description is given.

The boss laughs maniacally at John, who takes offense to the laughs and shoots a rocket at the boss, revealing the weakness he had found on the internet to be such a rocket. The boss dead, a happy John buries both dead bosses and plants 'pants' on them, wishing to make Ravenholm have pretty things.

He then goes to the lifeless body of Gordon, clearly sad, telling the body that he has killed the boss. However, he then sees a headcrab zombie has taken control of Gordon, reanimating his body and causing him to stand up. Gordon, who seems to still be self-aware and still recognizing that he is Gordon Freeman, lambasts John for 'getting here slow', blaming him for his transformation into a zombie ghost. He swears revenge on John.

The Future

It is not known what happens to John after this. The third part of the story has not been written, though the second part clearly claims that the saga is to be continued. Given the nature of the writer squirrelking, having not logged onto fanfiction.net for some time, we may assume that it will never be written by the original author as intended.
