The company's current president, Manabu Yamana, is best known prior to being the founder of Genius Sonority as the director of "Dragon Quest V" and "VI" (developed by Heartbeat), two of the best-selling Super Famicom games in Japan.

Genius Sonority began operations in July 2001 for the original purpose of developing "Pokémon" games for home consoles and was officially incorporated in June 2002, with funding provided by Capcom and The Pokémon Company.
