- Welfare state research (comparative welfare systems, public expenditure, welfare policies, globalisation and other economic challenges, labour force and working time, unemployment, marginalisation and citizenship, legitimacy and public attitudes, public services, efficiency and empowerment). Working Group Coordinator and management committee member, COST A13, Working Group on Unemployment (1998-2003). Member and coordinator of CCWS, Centre for Comparative Welfare State Studies, Aalborg University since 1996.

- Political opinion formation and political behaviour (public opinion, political cleavages, electoral behaviour, right radical parties, attitudes to Europe and Europeanization). Coordinator of The Danish ISSP Programme and the Danish Election Programme. Member of the Election Research Group, Aalborg University.

- Democracy and political power (political participation and citizenship, voluntary associations and social movements, efficacy and empowerment, the political system, political institutions, policy processes and decision-making processes, approaches in political science). Member of the Board of the Danish Democracy and Power Study (1999-2002). Member of the Steering Committee of CID-Citizenship, Involvement, Democracy (headed by prof.Jan W.van Deth, Univ. of Mannheim). Member of the Demos group, Aalborg University.
