Robert Osserman is an American mathematician.
Raised in
Bronx , he went toBronx High School of Science (diploma, 1942) andNew York University .He earned aPh.D. (1955) fromHarvard University on the thesis "Contributions to the Problem of Type" (onRiemann surfaces ) advised byLars Ahlfors . Stanford University (1957) where he is now aprofessor emeritus .At the same place he joined theMathematical Sciences Research Institute (1990). [ [http://www.msri.org/people/staff/osserman/ biopage] at MSRI] He worked ongeometric function theory ,differential geometry , the two integrated in a the theory ofminimal surfaces ,isoperimetric inequality , and other issues in the areas of astronomy, geometry, cartography and complex function theory. Osserman has also been head of mathematics atOffice of Naval Research , aFulbright Lecturer at theUniversity of Paris andGuggenheim Fellow at theUniversity of Warwick .
