Puławian faction

Puławian faction

Puławian faction - a common name for a faction within the leadership of the communist Polish United Workers' Party (Polish: PZPR), formed in 1956. The name comes from the Puławska Street in Warsaw, on which many of the members lived. Among the most prominent members were Roman Zambrowski i Leon Kasman.

This faction was opposed to the nationalistic and antisemitic Natolin faction. The Puławians sought great liberalization of socialism in Poland. After the events of Poznań June, they successfully backed the candidature of Władysław Gomułka for First Secretary of PZPR. Both the Natoline and the Pulawian factions disappeared towards the end of the 1950's.
