Burns, White & Hickton is an American law firm that was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1987 by Michael Burns, David White, David Hickton, and David Damico. Since then it has expanded to five different offices in three states and employs over 80 attorneys. Burns, White & Hickton is Pittsburgh's 10th largest law firm and aids in the legal areas of Transportation, Litigation, and Business Law.

History

Burns, White & Hickton was originally founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but has since expanded. Today there are offices in Wheeling, West Virginia; Philadelphia Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; and Princeton, New Jersey [1] .

Areas of Practice

Burns, White & Hickton focuses on Transportation, Litigation, and Business Law. They are broken up into three different departments or management committees [2] . In the specific area of transportation, B.W.H. concentrates in railroad litigation, occupational disease litigation, insurance claims, regulatory, trucking, shippers, and maritime. In the litigation department attorneys focuses on commercial and business litigation, construction, general liability, insurance law, medicare set-aside allocations, nursing home/personal care, product liability, professional malpractice, and workers' compensation. Corporate/business transactions, commercial real estate, counseling/compliance/governance, and financial institutions are all concentrated practices in the Business Law department.

Burns, White & Hickton's clients range from individuals and start-up companies to multinational corporations. This includes commercial enterprises, transportation service providers, nonprofit and government agencies, health care organizations and providers, banks and financial institutions as well as technology, manufacturing and insurance and surety companies.

Notable Cases

In 2007, attorneys Patrick Casey and Sandra Chapman obtained a favorable defense verdict on behalf of a telecommunications company. The trial was held in the Circuit Court of Pleasants County, West Virginia. The trial dealt with a client who installed and maintained a utility pole that fell and severely injured the plaintiff's elbow. The plaintiff sought over two million dollars worth of damages.
