MTX Audio is an American consumer audio company that manufactures sound equipment for many applications, including car audio, home audio, marine audio and live sound products. They are best known for their car audio products and they specialize in subwoofers and subwoofer amplifiers. MTX Audio is a brand name owned by the Mitek Corporation. MTX Audio, as well as Kicker and JL Audio, is known as one of the pioneers of the car audio industry. MTX Audio's parent company, Mitek Corporation, patented the square speaker design, which has more surface area for its nominal diameter as it is not measured diagonally. The patent was filed and published in 2007.[1] The MTX Jackhammer 24 is a 24 inch square subwoofer and one of the largest available on the consumer market.

History

MTX Audio was founded in 1979 by 26-year-old Loyd Ivey in Winslow, Illinois, when Ivey turned his hobby of building speakers into a business. In 1991, MTX Audio acquired Soundcraftsmen, a defunct audio equipment manufacturer which was located in Santa Ana, California, and was called MTX Soundcraftsmen until 1999.

Today

Loyd Ivey is currently the chairman and CEO of MTX Audio, which employs over 750 people. They have manufacturing facilities located in Phoenix, Arizona, Monroe, Wisconsin, and Winslow, Illinois.[2]

Notable products

Car audio first

The first enclosed car audio speaker system, later known as the MTX bass expander. In the late '70s, Loyd Ivey, unsatisfied with the performance of his stock radio in his truck, custom designed speaker boxes to go in his truck using large loudspeakers leftover from MTX speaker systems made for discotheques, which had just seen a quick decline in popularity.

MTX Jackhammer

The MTX Jackhammer is a 22-inch subwoofer and was one of the largest subwoofers available on the market after the Audiobahn 34" and Clarion's 32" subwoofer. A Jackhammer was installed in a 1986 Buick Century during an episode of Pimp My Ride.[3]

Thunder 1000000

The Thunder 1000000, a subwoofer created by Richard Clark and David Navone, sponsored by Concept Designs & MTX Audio, an amazing 60 inch custom-made subwoofer which holds the record for the largest subwoofer ever made. The Thunder 1000000, for obvious reasons, is not available on the consumer market, nor is it a production model. Picture: [4]
