Prem Sooriyakumar

Prem Sooriyakumar (born 1978) is a documentary filmmaker and picture editor based in Toronto, Canada.

History

Born in Sri Lanka to Tamil parents, he immigrated Canada in 1988 to flee the civil war in his native country. Arriving in Montreal but finally settling in Scarborough, Prem eventually returned to his first adopted Canadian city to study Film Production at The School of Cinema at Concordia University. While there he was hired by the National Film Board of Canada before finding a home at Galafilm as an assistant picture editor. Returning to Toronto to focus on a new film project, Sooriyakumar worked as a creative consultant and videojournalist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

In 2003, he and fellow filmmaker Korbett Matthews founded 7th Embassy (7E), an international filmtank devoted to the production of creative documentary media projects and development initiatives.
