Alexandre Frere

Alexandre Frere was a French doctor and educator who became a planter upon his immigration to southern Louisiana.

Origins

Alexandre Frere was born in the village of Saint Nicolas des Champs, located outside of Paris, France, in 1770. Little is known of his parents but it is assumed the family was at least of modest financial means since Alexandre was very well-educated. For reasons that remain unknown, Alexandre left France for the Louisiana colony sometime in the late 1780s to early 1790s. Upon his arrival, he worked as a tutor for the children of Gregoire and Cecile Pellerin, owners of a vast amount of land given largely out of Spanish land grants designed to entice settlers that would form the buffer zone Spain wanted to protect its most valuable colony, Mexico.
