Louisiana .Origins
Alexandre Frere was born in the village of
Saint Nicolas des Champs , located outside ofParis ,France , in 1770. Little is known of his parents but it is assumed the family was at least of modest financial means since Alexandre was very well-educated. For reasons that remain unknown, Alexandre leftFrance for theLouisiana colony sometime in the late 1780s to early 1790s. Upon his arrival, he worked as a tutor for the children of Gregoire and Cecile Pellerin, owners of a vast amount of land given largely out of Spanish land grants designed to entice settlers that would form the buffer zone Spain wanted to protect its most valuable colony, Mexico.
