This is the phenomenon of orchestral string players knocking on the back of their instruments in response to an unintended double-entendre during rehearsals, usually initiating from the conductor. This is particularly the case in British orchestras. Some orchestras, however, have taken official action to control knocking, in an effort to raise the general tone of rehearsals.
