The project was started on April 14th 2005, was abandoned, then moved toWikia , and in November 2006 it was moved to hitchwiki.org and relaunched as Hitchwiki. At the same time versions in other languages were started. As of August 2008 there are versions in 7 languages, English, Finnish, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. The website makes use of theMediaWiki software and allows anonymous edits. It's possible to log in throughOpenID .
