In 1846 Governor Grey requested military forces for the defence of the early settlers in New Zealand. Instead of regular miltary forces a detachment of retired soldiers known as 'The Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps' was approved to be recruited instead [http://www.nzfenciblesociety.org.nz/] . Conditions for enlistment of being under the age of 48 and with a minimum of 15 years of military service were posted at regiments throughout the British Isles.
After enrollment for 7 years the cottage of 2 rooms on an acre of land they were to be provided would become their property in exchange for attending military exercise 12 days a year.
10 ships brought 721 pensioners and their families totaling over 2500 people arrived in New Zealand as a result between the years 1847 and 1852.
