The 123rd All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship will commence in May 2009. Kilkenny, who are attempting to capture a record-equalling fourth championship in-a-row, will start as favourites and defending champions.

Format

The format of the 2009 championship will be slightly different from previous years. Firstly, Galway have had no opposition in the Connacht Senior Hurling Championship since 2004. Due to this it has been decided at a special meeting of the GAA's congress for Galway to join the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship for a three-year trial period, starting with the 2009 championship. Antrim GAA, being the only Tier 1 team in the Ulster Senior Hurling Championship, will also participate in the Leinster Championship on a three-year trial period. Antrim will also still ccompete in the Ulster Championship which will be run as a separate tournament to the All-Ireland Hurling Championship.

12 counties will participate in Tier 1 of the 2009 Championship. These teams are as follows:
* Leinster: Antrim, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly and Wexford
* Munster: Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford

Provincial Championships

The Munster championship will be played as usual with five teams. The Leinster championship will also proceed as usual, except for the addition of both Antrim and Galway, brining the total number of competing teams to seven. The Leinster and Munster champions will advance directly to the All-Ireland semi-finals.

All-Ireland Qualifiers

The various losers from each match in both provincial championships up to the semi-final stages will be played off against each other, with a resulting two teams winning places in the All-Ireland Quarter-finals. The exact structure has not yet been announced.

All-Ireland Series

"Quarter-finals:" (2 matches) The defeated Munster and Leinster finalists will play the winners of the qualifier phase 4 games.

"Semi-finals:" (2 matches) The Munster and Leinster champions will play the winners of the quarter-finals.

Promotion/Relegation

It has yet to be announced wether promotion/relegation between Tier 1 and Tier 2 will be in operation in the 2009 championship.
