- Redfish Lake
Located in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Redfish Lake is named for the brilliant Sockeye Salmon that once returned from the Pacific Ocean in such massive quantities that the lake shimmered red during spawning season. Sadly, these fish are now on the endangered species list. The Redfish Lake area hosts many developed recreation opportunities including the Redfish Lake Lodge (restaurant, cabin and boat rentals) and Forest Service campgrounds, boat launch, day-use areas and a visitor center.
Season: All Year Hours: Visitor Center opens weekends June 15th - Labor Day open Fri., Sat., & Sun 9am-5pm.
The dimensions of the lake are 5 miles long, 1 mile wide,387 feet deep, and 11 miles in circumference. The trail to hike around the lake is actually 17 1/2 miles.
The average temperature of the lake ranges from freezing (solid) to a high of around 62 degrees Fahrenheit in late July & early August. In the winter the lake freezes over with ice from 2 1/2 to 3 feet deep.
The surrounding peaks are Mt Heyburn at 10,229 ft. and Grand Mogul at 9,733 ft.
