On September 22nd 2008 The Long War Journal published an article on the hijacking of an Iranian ship, the MV Iran Deyanat, by Somali pirates. [http://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2008/09/mystery_surrounds_hi.php] According to the article pirates began to develop health conditions including skin burns and hair loss shortly after the hijacking occurred, which called into question the nature of the cargo being shipped. The Long War Journal points out that the vessel was owned and operated by Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, an Iranian state-run company, and the scheduled time from the entry into the Gulf of Aden to the Suez canal was two days longer than normal. The article also notes that officials of Puntland believe that the vessel carries a shipment of chemical weapons destined for Islamist insurgents in Eritrea. This article caused a minor stir in the blogosphere, where it was picked up by a number of blogs. The Long War Journal has received criticism and its hijacking article have been called into question due to its affiliation with several institutions including Gryphon Air, which is suggested to be involved in CIA rendition flights. [http://www.wakeupfromyourslumber.com/node/8390]
