From its humble beginning, the University of Perpetual Help System Pangasinan, has now grown substantially. The College of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Nursing have Level II accreditation by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA).
The founders, Drs. Jose and Josefina Tamayo, created an ideal partnership. Dr. Josefina was always at Dr. Jose’s side, a partner in every undertaking until her early demise in 1987. And, as a fitting tribute, University status of Perpetual Help System was granted on the natal day of Dr. Josefina Laperal Tamayo on April 20, 1997. The nature of the University of Perpetual Help System is a private non-sectarian institution. As one of the component of the Perpetual Help System, it advocates quality education in the formation of research-oriented professionals, committed leaders, and dynamic Christian citizens imbued with Perpetualite values.
History
Two doctors with a big heart for the people of their town and province in particular and the Filipinos in general, the couple Drs. Jose and Josefina Tamayo, founded the Perpetual Help College in the heart of the Municipality of Malasiqui in Pangasinan in 1973.
The school started with only a handful of students and faculty members housed in one building with four rooms.
But consistent with the couple’s dream to accelerate the development of health education and services in the rural areas, particularly in Pangasinan, the college blossomed and to this day continues to serve the youth and the community.
Three years after its founding, the college opened its School of Midwifery with a vision to serve and mold individuals to be better citizens. Only 14 students started the new school in 1976. Despite holding the classes mostly in the Perpetual Help College hospital premises, the School of Midwifery managed to have a 100 percent passing rate for its pioneer graduates. The feat spread like wildfire in the province triggering a marked increase in enrolment in the succeeding years.
With their undying efforts of creating an institution which will continuously be of service to the community, the college founders decided to open other colleges in other rural areas and in Metro Manila. To do this, they had to leave the hospital and college under the tutelage of their daughter, Dr. Maria Theresa Salazar. In 1976, the hospital was entrusted to a friend, Dr. Benjamin T. Fadullon, who had helped in the pioneering work of opening the school. Under his leadership, the college and hospital in Pangasinan experienced growth which was most welcomed by the community. The vision of the founder stands firm as it was made possible through the supportive efforts, initiative and leadership of his eldest son- Dr. Antonio L. Tamayo. Now, the campus stands firm on a strategic ground here at the heart of Malasiqui.
Assisted by sincere, dedicated men and women who are now the pioneer professors and members of the administration, the school has then grown substantially starting with a four room one-storey school to a now gigantic campus. Aside from the School of Midwifery, the college now offers flagship courses in the field of agri-business, health and science and various fields.
From the original plan of constructing a hospital is also a school which now caters to the needs of the community serving as a catalyst for positive change. From a set of 14 midwifery students to a progressively increasing enrolment reaching thousands, the institution continues to expand its horizons in a not so fast but sure way of achieving success.
Although originally focused on allied heath, PHC expanded to the educational field offering services on all levels and even more, it even continues to build its name in community service and research.
The late Drs. Jose and Josefina Tamayo created an ideal partnership among his officials and workers which enabled the college to overcome all the odds and succeed in all its endeavors. This success culminated with the eventual upgrading of the college to university status. As a fitting tribute to one of its founders, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted university status to the Perpetual Help System on the natal day of Dr. Josefina Laperal Tamayo on April 20, 1997. This new status gave the institution a well earned recognition not only in the province and the entire region but in the entire country.
Now with a name to be proud of, the Perpetual Help College System which once started with nothing serves as an important landmark not only in the municipality of Malasiqui but in the country as well.
Recent History
From a humble, one-floor building of four classrooms, the school now stands proud with three imposing buildings and a four-storey hospital to boost, with another four-storey school building of 16 rooms now being constructed and should be functional by the second semester. The institution proves to be one of the most striking landmarks not only in Malasiqui but also in entire Pangasinan.
Along with the new buildings come several innovations to keep up with the demands of high-quality education. A mock hotel has been constructed for the practicum of Hotel and Restaurant Management students. With the soothing, homey ambience, the shotel is used in receiving guests.
Aside from the newly constructed hospital which will serve as the training ground for Nursing, Caregiver and Midwifery students, PHC also has the Nursing Skills Laboratory complete with facilities necessary for health care.
From small, hardly conducive classrooms with squeaking armed chairs and about-to-be-torn-off-the-wall chalkboards, the school now has air conditioned, fully-equipped classrooms and offices. All administrative offices have Internet connections. Two computer laboratories also provide students ready access to the Internet to facilitate their academic researches.
In a town with a population of 145,629 people and is continuously growing, the Perpetual Help College offers a complete program that caters to the demands for quality education and healthcare without going beyond the borders of their hometown to avail of the opportunity. PHC also offers Pre-Elementary, Elementary and Secondary Education which gives students two options: Academic High School and Business High School, the latter going beyond the typical secondary education with the addition of subjects such as Marketing, Bookkeeping, Stenography, Accounting, Foreign Language, Speech and Journalism which will serve as training for a future college education.
The school that once offered the townspeople limited choices for obtaining a degree now offers nine options for its Baccalaureate programs: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Human Resource Development Management and Management Accounting, Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Secondary Education Major in English, Mathematics, General Science and Social Studies.
Moreover, the College of Hotel and Restaurant Management have sent countless students to countries like Taiwan and Singapore for On-the-Job Training. This OJT paved the way for these students for employment abroad.
In addition to these programs, the school offers Associate in Computer Technology, Associate in Computer Secretarial, Associate in Midwifery and Agri-Business. Graduates of these courses have been working successfully abroad and in the cities or in the different establishments in town. Still, a considerable number of the graduates have found employment in their own Alma Mater as PHC sees to it that jobs are secured for its graduates.
In 2005, at a time when the demands for Caregivers skyrocketed, PHC opened its six-month Caregiver course, providing rigorous training for would-be Caregivers abroad. The program is TESDA accredited.
Aside from constant training of its administrators and faculty members and fruitful educational tours and OJT for its students, PHC continues to hone its family members by engaging them in different organizations meant to refine them. For the students, they have the Supreme Student Council, the High School Student Body and the Pupil Government Organization. These are organizations that train students to become the country’s future leaders. They aim to tap the inner talents of students.
Being under the umbrella of the University of Perpetual Help System with branches in Manila, Las Pinas, Molino, GMA, Calamba, Binan and Isabela, PHC Malasiqui is also a satellite of the Institute of Language and Communication Center (ILCC) with Dr. Adelaida Avalos as its International Corporate Director. The ILCC’s objectives include the opening of a contact center in every unit and the enhancement of the English Language and Communication program in the UPH system. PHC continues its drive to produce an English speaking community to further develop students to become highly qualified and competitive professionals.
Still, despite being a tool for promoting the English language as medium of communications, PHC does not fail to preserve its cultural heritage. The DJGT Foundation, the brainchild of Dr. Jose G. Tamayo, the founder of UPHS, and with Mr. Emiliano Jovellanos as its director, is a foundation that is set to restore the people’s patriotic spirits by producing books and conducting activities centering on traditions and the native language. The foundation encourages not only students but also community people in general to look back and pay tribute to their ancestors by preserving their culture.
With the 36 years of continuous service rendered not only to the people of Pangasinan but also to people of nearby provinces and even to people from provinces as far as Davao and Surigao, Perpetual Help College has stayed true to its name. And it will continue to render Perpetual Help and service to people in the next decades upholding quality performance in education and health care.
