Foston and Scropton was owned by the Agard family from the 14th to the 17th century. It was acquired by John Bate in 1679. Google Books] Brownlow Bate sold the estate to John Broadhurst in 1784. The manor house was destroyed by fire in 1836.The present house was built, in a
Jacobethan style , to a design by architect TC Hine, in 1863. It's main two storey front has eight bays and an offcentre three storey tower.The house was sold to the Prison Service in 1953.
