= Deputy Haven Blake Gammill =
Deputy Haven Blake Gammill was a thirty year old police officer from Douglas County Georgia. He had two young daughters, Haven who was three years old, and Jewel Grace who was eighteen months. He had planned to remarry in the spring. Deputy Blake Gammill, as he was better known as around Douglas County, served Douglas County for eight years. That was until he was killed by gunfire while making an arrest on February 24, 2005. He is the only officer to be killed in Douglas County since 1870.
The Shooting
Deputy Gammill and many other officers were serving a warrant to a man, and as the house was being searched, the arresting man’s step-father pulled out a gun and shot Deputy Gammill in the face. Although the officers were protective gear, Gammill was struck just below the edge of his helmet. Another deputy shot and killed the step- father. Deputy Gammill was taken to Atlanta Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at around one o’clock early the next morning.
The Memorial
The memorial was held on February 28, 2005. Many officers around metro Atlanta counties traveled to Douglasville to pay their respects. The funeral was held at Central Baptist Church in Douglasville, Georgia. There has been a memorial fund that has been set up in Deputy Gammill’s memory. Authorities say contributions can be made to The Blake Gammill Memorial Fund. Donations and gifts can be given to The First Commerce Bank of Douglasville Georgia. Contributions go to Deputy Gammill’s family and children.
