Sound Ranger

Sound Rangers locate enemy artillery using equipment such as super-sensitivemicrophones that can pick up the sound of firing to pinpoint enemy positions, so that the location could be pinpointed by surveying techniques and trogonometry. In the Second World War they were extensively used to locate enemy batteries, so that fire could be directed accurately by the artillery. Many of the officers were former surveyors, estate agents and geographers because of their surveying experience in civilian life. They would be located near the front line but not always among the firing line for their safety. Once the enemy guns were located accurately, their position would be conveyed to the artillery by radio communication.

In modern warfare much work is nowe done by computers and digital communications.
