Tableau Software is a provider of data visualization software.

History

Tableau Software began as an R&D project inside Stanford University’s Department of Computer Science. With Professor Pat Hanrahan, Chris Stolte, a Ph.D. student, combined a structured query language for databases with a descriptive language for rendering graphics and invented a database visualization language called VizQL™ (Visual Query Language) [VizQL, http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1142473.1142560] . Tableau used VizQL as a foundation to produce a software application that interacts with relational databases, cubes and spreadsheets and then auto-generates visualizations including reports, tables, charts and graphs.

Products

Tableau Software offers two main products: Tableau Desktop™ and Tableau Server™. Tableau Desktop is a software application that enables people to connect to a data source and create analyses and summaries of large amounts of data through a drag-and-drop interface. Tableau Server™ is a Web-based solution for sharing analytic visualizations across workgroups and organizations.

Awards

Tableau Software has won awards including "Best Overall in Data Visualization" by DM Review, "Best of 2005 for Data Analysis" by PC Magazine [http://www.tableausoftware.com/docs/ts_aw_pcmag05.pdf] , and "2008 Best Business Intelligence Solution (CODiE award)" by the Software & Information Industry Association [2008 Codie Award Winners, http://www.siia.net/codies/2008/winners.asp#Software] .
