- Chex Trek
"Chex Trek: Beyond the Quest" is an incomplete and discontinued "
Doom 3 " total conversion based on the game "Chex Quest " released byDigital Café in 1996. Beyond the Quest". [http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=10528] The most unique feature is that there is no killing involved. The monsters, called flemoids, are teleported back to their own dimension when shot. Developed by a small team with the name FarceWare, their goal was to make a fun and engaging first person shooter that people of all ages could play, from kids to adults, and would be fun for every age group. The main demographic it was created for though was 16 to 25 year olds that enjoy the first person shooter genre, but don't like excessive blood, gore, or violence that is prevalent in most of today's smash hit titles. With "Chex Quest " as a guide for visuals and basic story, the question arose as to whether a title could be created from the same fictional universe on a newer game engine. Not much story is told in "Chex Trek" due to the fact that it was never completed. In the first playable level there is some vague story telling, but there is no conclusion or explanation to what is really happening. The player starts on a storage space-ship that orbits around planet cereal. Stored on the ship is Zorch, a liquid energy that fuels everything on their planet. It's so inexpensive to refine zorch that it's nearly unheard of for anyone to try and steal it. A silent alarm is triggered on the storage ship, and the player is sent to investigate. While equipping himself with weaponry, a flemoid, an evil cereal eating creature from the milk dimension, rises out of a pool of slime on the floor. As he shoots at it with your zorch powered rifle, it becomes obvious that he isn't affecting it in any way. He runs out of the room to get away from the flemoid and to find the source of the slime that it came out of. After making it to the bridge to unlock a door, he realizes that he's inadvertently let a swarm of the flemoids into a deeper portion of the ship. As they demolish the ship and cover it in slime, he receives orders to evacuate the ship and fly back to planet cereal to report to the cereals council about what he saw and learned. While making his way back to his ship, he sees that the flemoids are stealing zorch.
Development
History
The initial project was conceived and directed by Stoney Dumples. He watched as mods were being created for "Doom 3" and thought that it would be neat to see a total conversion of "Chex Quest" made for "Doom 3". After noticing that no one else going to make it, he started up his own mod. With no knowledge of how to manage a team, and with very little to offer to production other than a storyline and some texturing skills, he started trying to get some help from other modders in the "Doom 3" modding community. [http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=10505&p=94111#p94111] zl1corvette joined up and together they built the first release (released on Jun 28, 2005), which featured one level that was a remake of the first level in "Chex Quest", some new stationary models such as lights and a spacecraft, and all new textures that fit the visual style they were trying to emulate. After this release SadisticTheory joined, and over for the next couple of months they put together many internal releases comprising of a few new enemies, new weapon visuals, a new weapon model, and another level. Their second release was released in January of 2006. When the "Doom 3" update to 1.3.1 was released, and new build of "Chex Trek" was released on August 18, 2007 so it could be played on the new update.
