Song Wan (宋万), nicknamed 'Giant in the clouds' (云里金刚), is a character in the epic Chinese novel, "
Water Margin ".Song Wan, along with
Wang Lun andDu Qian were the pioneers of the stronghold onLiangshan . Once,Lin Chong fled toChai Jin 's residence after killing Lu Qian and his men, and abandoned the burnt storage field. Chai Jin wrote a letter to Wang Lun, recommending Lin Chong to join the Liangshan band. However, the narrow-hearted and jealous Wang Lun refused to allow Lin Chong to join, and tried to send Lin away with gifts. In the end, after constant persuading from Song Wan, Du Qian andZhu Gui , Wang agreed to let Lin join the band, only if Lin fulfills the traditional requirement in joining Liangshan; Lin has to kill a person and present the head to the chief within three days.After much waiting, Lin finally met
Yang Zhi and he tried to kill Yang. However, Yang proved to be as powerful as Lin and the two engaged in combat in which neither emerged the winner. In the end, the fight was stopped by Wang Lun and he agreed to let Lin Chong join the Liangshan band.Later,
Chao Gai and his six friends fled to Liangshan for refuge after having robbed the convoy of birthday gifts. The narrow-hearted and jealous Wang Lun once again tried to refuse Chao using the same method he used on Lin Chong earlier. Lin Chong, underWu Yong 's smart persuasion, killed the incompetent Wang Lun and the charismatic Chao Gai assumed the new position of chief.Song Wan became one of the leaders of the Liangshan infantry and
72 Earthly Warriors , and made contributions to Liangshan through the battles with Liangshan's enemies. After the heroes had obtained amnesty from the emperor, Song Wan followed them on their campaigns against theLiao Tartars and southern rebels. During theFang La campaign, Song was assigned to attack Runzhou, where he was shot down and trampled to death by horses in the battle.
