John Spiegel Michels (born March 19, 1973 in La Jolla, California) is a former American football offensive tackle in the NFL.

College career

Played for the La Jolla High Vikings where he was a first Tean All-American defensive tackle. He played college football at the University of Southern California and was All-Pac 10 and a second Team All-American, after being converted from a defensive end. He helped to lead the Trojans to a victory over Northwestern in the 1996 Rose Bowl.

Professional career

He was drafted in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. When then-starter and fellow Trojan Ken Ruettgers went down with a knee injury in training camp, Michels took over the left tackle duties. He performed adequately in his rookie season, earning NFL All-Rookie honors by several publications, but was replaced by veteran Bruce Wilkerson in the playoffs. In 1997, he lost the starting job again to that year's first round pick Ross Verba after suffering thumb and knee injuries. After having his best training camp as a professional in 1998, he injured his right knee and spent the year on injured reserve. Unable to recover from his knee injury he struggled in training camp in 1999, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for defensive end Jon Harris. Michels only lasted a couple of weeks before he suffered more injuries, which ultimately ended his career.

Personal

He married Melissa Danielle Glenn on February 15th, 1997. They have three children, Lauren, McKenna, and Evan. John graduated from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and is currently doing his residency in radiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas.
