- Douglas Arthur Lowe
Douglas Arthur (Doug) Lowe was born on April 11, 1990, the youngest child of Dr. Paul Lowe, Sr. and Dr. Nadine Cartwright-Lowe. Described as vibrant, passionate, creative and intense, Doug graduated from Shelton High School, Shelton, CT, with honors and was accepted to Cornell early decision at age 16.
Enrolled in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR), Doug had successfully completed his freshman year at the time of his death on June 12, 2008. He was a Jackie Robinson Scholar and Cornell Tradition Fellow with aspirations for economics, politics and film.
Doug had also established himself at Cornell as a gifted jazz musician and dancer. From childhood he, his brother, Paul, Jr., and sister, Veronica, Doug played jazz on a professional level, forming a musical group called Young Jazee Vibes. He played soprano and tenor saxophones, trumpet, harmonica, keyboard and percussion.
With his family, Doug often performed at festivals, nursing homes, schools and fundraising events. A composer, arranger and writer of music, Doug was a member of the American Federation of Jazz Societies, the Arts Council of Greater New Haven and the Hartford Jazz Society.
Doug was passionate about life and loved his family and friends very much. He positively influenced every person with whom he came in contact. He is survived by his loving parents Nadine and Paul, Sr., brother Paul, Jr., sister Veronica, grandparents, aunts, uncles and a multitude of friends.
In the summer of 2008, a scholarship fund in Douglas' name was created to give African-American students the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from higher education similar to Douglas entitled the Douglas Arthur Lowe Prism for Beauty on Earth Scholarship Fund.
