Portland, Oregon television market. It is owned and operated byOregon Public Broadcasting . It broadcasts its analog signal on VHF channel 10, and its digital signal on UHF channel 27.Channel 10 signed on the air as KOAP on
February 6 1961 . Called letters mirroring originating station KOAC-TV Channel 7 Corvallis. KOAP call letter meaning: Oregon Air Portland. The station was first housed at campus ofPortland State University . With the transmitter being located on Council Crest. KOAP was a member of NET,National Educational Television carrying its programs. OnApril 30 1962 KOAP's FM sister service signed on the air. By 1966 most local programs originated at KOAP-TV. In October 1970 PBS, Public Broadcasting Service replaced NET. KOAP-TV and KOAC-TV were known on the air as OEB, Oregon Educational Broadcasting. In early 1972 OEB became OEPBS, Oregon Educational & Public Broadcasting Service. In October 1981 OEPBS became OPB, Oregon Public Broadcasting. OnFebruary 15 1989 KOAP FM-TV became KOPB FM-TV.OPB was a pioneer in
HDTV . As early asMarch 5 1997 OPB's experimentalHDTV station transmitted a random-bit data stream. OnSeptember 15 1997 OPB Portland was assigned the experimental call letters KAXC for channel 35. Then onOctober 11 1997 at 4:37 P.M. KAXC became the first TV station in Oregon and one of the first on the west coast to transmit anHDTV picture. After experimentation ended, channel 35 was vacated. OnDecember 7 2001 KOPB-DT began operation on channel 27.Digital Television
