Swanton Novers is a village and a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk ["OS Explorer Map 24 - Norfolk Coast Central". ISBN 0 319 21726 4.] . The village is 15.1 miles west south west of Cromer, 23.1 miles north north west of Norwich and 123 miles north north east of London. The village lies 6 miles south west of the town of Holt.The nearest railway station is at Sheringham for the Bittern Line which runs between Sheringham, Cromer and Norwich. The nearest airport is Norwich International Airport.

History

Swanton Novers has an entry in the Domesday Book of 1085 [The Domesday Book, Englands Heritage, Then and Now, Editor: Thomas Hinde,Norfolk page 195 ISBN 1858334403] . In the great book Swanton Novers is recorded by the name "Suanetuna". The main tennent was Bishop William. The survey also notes that there were 200 sheep.

The Parish Church of Saint Edmund

The Parish Church of Saint Edmund is a little remote from the village. The church has a been heavily restored in recent times as it was in a very poor state of repair. The church tower was rebuilt in 1821 [The Popular Guide to Norfolk Churches,1:North-East Norfolk, By D.P. Mortlock & C.V. Roberts, 1981, Pub:Acorn Editions, Page 20 Briston All saints, ISBN 0 906554 04 7 ] . Much of the restoration work has been carried out using old building materials from the original church buildings which dated from the Norman period [Norfolk 1: Norwich and North-East, By Nikolaus Pevsner and Bill Wilson, Swanton Novers entry.
