- Lomonosov Ridge
The Lomonosov Ridge ( _ru. Хребет Ломоносова; tr.:"Khrebet Lomonosova"; _fr. Dorsale de Lomonossov) is an unusual underwater ridge of
continental crust in theArctic Ocean . It spans 1800 km from theNew Siberian Islands over the central part of the ocean toEllesmere Island of theCanadian Arctic islands .CBC News. Retrieved July 25, 2007.] The width of the Lomonosov Ridge varies from 60 to 200 km. It rises 3,300 to 3,700m above theseabed . The minimum depth of the ocean above the ridge is 954 m. Slopes of the ridge are relatively steep, broken up bycanyon s, and covered with layers ofsilt .The Lomonosov Ridge was first discovered by the
Soviet high-latitude expeditions in1948 and is named afterMikhail Lomonosov . The name was approved by the Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN ). cite web |url=http://www.gebco.net/about_us/meetings_and_minutes/documents/gebco_scufn_15_report.pdf |title=IHO-IOC GEBCO Gazetteer |accessdate=2008-05-24 |publisher=International Hydrographic Organization /Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission |date=September 2007 ]In the 2000s, the geological structure of the ridge attracted international attention due to a
December 20 2001 official submission by theRussian Federation to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in accordance with theUnited Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (article 76, paragraph 8). The document proposed establishing new outer limits for theRussian continental shelf , beyond the previous 200 mile zone, but within the RussianArctic sector. In April 2007, Canadian and Russian scientists were sent to map the ridge as a possible precedent for determining sovereignty over the area. In late June 2007, Russian scientists claimed that the ridge is an extension of Russia's territory. In late July 2007, a Russian expedition sent an icebreaker and two mini-submarines, Mir-I and Mir-II, to explore the region. Russian scientists dove 4261 m (14,000 feet) below the surface and on Aug 2 planted a rust-proof titanium metal Russian flag as a symbolic gesture of their claim to the region.
