Northumberland Council

Northumberland Council

Northumberland Council is a new English unitary authority which will replace the current two-tier system of six district councils and one county council in the county of Northumberland as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England.

The new council will take over on 1 April 2009, and the election of its 69 councillors took place on 1 May 2008.

These councillors assumed control of the existing county council. The councillors for the six districts - Blyth Valley - Wansbeck, Castle Morpeth, Tynedale, Alnwick and Berwick-upon-Tweed - will remain in office until their respective district councils are dissolved on 1 April 2009.
