The 20th Marine Regiment (Engineer) was formed in 1943 at Camp Pendleton, California. It originally consisted of three battalions. The 1st and 2nd Battalions were made up of Marines while the 3rd Battalion was formed with US Navy Construction Battalion(Seabees) personnel. While assigned to the the 20th Regiment the Seabees, like all Fleet Marine Force assigned sailors, wore US Marine Corps uniforms with US Navy insignia and markings.
