The fourth USS "Mohawk" was a cutter which served in the
United States Navy in 1917."Mohawk", a first‑class
steel revenue cutter built at Richmond,Virginia . She commissioned into theUnited States Revenue Cutter Service on10 May 1904 . Based at New York,New York , she cruised theAtlantic Ocean and adjacent waters betweenGay Head ,Massachusetts , and theDelaware breakwater. When the Revenue Cutter Service merged with theUnited States Lifesaving Service to form theUnited States Coast Guard in 1915, she became a Coast Guard cutter. Her primary duties in the Revenue Cutter Service and Coast Guard were assisting vessels in distress and enforcing navigational laws."Mohawk" was temporarily transferred to the
United States Navy on6 April 1917 for service inWorld War I . While serving on coastal duty in connection withconvoy operations, she was struck by an unknown merchant vessel and sank on1 October 1917 offSandy Hook ,New Jersey . All hands were saved but the water was deemed too deep to warrantsalvage operations.References
