Armagh City and Bann District Council

Armagh City and Bann District Council

Armagh City and Bann District Council is a proposed Northern Irish local government district. Under the latest decision by the Review of Public Administration the district would be created by merging Armagh City and District Council, Banbridge District Council and Craigavon Borough Council, though with the loss of the remaining half of Slieve Croob to Newry City and Down District Council.

The new district will cover parts of counties Armagh and Down, taking in the upper Bann valley and much of the southern shore of Lough Neagh as well as the City of Armagh, the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, and will border County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. The district would have an electorate of 124,996.cite web | title=Provisional Recommendations of the Local Government Boundaries Commissioner for Northern Ireland| work=LGBC | url=http://www.lgbc-ni.org/index/provisional_recommendations.htm | accessdate=2008-09-26] The name of the new District was announced on September 17. The first election for the new district was due to take place in May 2009, but on April 25, 2008, Shaun Woodward, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland announced that the scheduled 2009 district council elections were to be postponed until 2011.
