Yengema is the second largest town in Kono District located in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone . The major industry in Yengema is diamond mining and the town has estimated population of 35,948. The population of Yengema consist mainly of the Kono and Mandingo ethnic groups. The town is home to the Yengema Airport, which is main airport that serves the Kono District. The majority of the population in the town are muslim, Christians are present though, mainly among the Kono ethnic group. Yengema also has a large number of the Sierra Leonean-Lebanese population.

Yengema was the centre of heavy fighting between the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and the Government forces during the Sierra Leone civil war due to the rich diamond reserves in the area.

Ethnic group

The population of Yengema consist mainly of the Kono and Mandingo ethnic groups. The majority of the population in the town are muslim, Christians are present though, mainly among the Kono and the Sierra Leonean-Lebanese community. Yengema has schools, a hospital, and an airport. Like the rest of the country, football is the most popular sport in the town of Yengema. The town does not have a major football club; however, the Diamond Stars of Kono represent Yengema and the rest of the Kono District in the Sierra Leone National Premier League, the top football league in the country.
