It is on the Amsterdam - Alkmaar - Den Helder main line, also known as the Staatslijn K. The station is operated byNederlandse Spoorwegen and is an Intercity station, where all trains stop.History
Station Alkmaar opened on 20 December 1865. The glass over the station entrance was put in in the 1960s. The railway line from Amsterdam to Alkmaar was electrified in 1931, the line to Den Helder in 1958 was electrified. Behind the platforms are 7 sidings, where trains are stabled between peak hours and at night.
On June 25, 2007 there was a shooting incident involving a Turkish man who shot his ex-wife . The man then shot himself through the head and died later in hospital of his injuries.Fact|date=October 2008
