Colonel in theUnited States Army who died while leading a charge against insurgents inManila during thePhilippine-American War . Born inPhiladelphia , Egbert joined the 12th Infantry Regiment of theArmy of the Potomac as a First Lieutenant on September 23, 1861. During theAmerican Civil War , Egbert participated in the battles Gaines Mills and Malvern Hills, was taken prisoner during the battles of Cedar Mountain and Gettysburg, and was wounded in theBattle of Bethesda Church . After the Civil War he remained in the Army, and at the start of theSpanish-American War was a Lieutenant Colonel. He commanded the 6th United States Infantry in the Santiago campaign until he was wounded in theBattle of El Caney on July 1 1898. While still recovering, he was promoted to Colonel of the 22nd United States Infantry and sailed to thePhilippines . He arrived inManila on March 4, 1899 and was killed in action on March 23, 1899.Harry Egbert is buried in Section 1 of
Arlington National Cemetery with his wife, Ellen Young Egbert.Fort Egbert (1899 - 1911) inEagle, Alaska was named for him, as is Egbert Avenue inSan Francisco, California .External links
