= ABOUT =

Newnan Southern Stars(NSS) is a competitive cheerleading gym based in Newnan, Georgia. NSS opened in 2002 as an addition to the Newnan School of Gymnastics under founder and head coach, Kim Bossman and gym owner, Greg (Cricket) Shellnut. Bossman resigned in 2006 to raise her family and is now the owner of Georgia Heat, another competitive cheerleading gym in Coweta County. NSS is currently co-owned by Serik Barrios, Shellnut and Kathy McMichael. The coaching staff in 2002 included Bossman, Barrios, Nikki Fisher, Samiha Alexander, Jess Sandlin, and Chris Swiderski. Since then the coaching staff has expanded to include former and current NSS cheerleaders including, Jessica Massingale, Rose Thompson, Cassie Brown, Jason Cluelow, Jessi Griffies, Courtney Freed, Allison Osterly, Anna Cole, and Jordan Misutka. In total, the coaches have 26 years of experience and work hard to keep the program very family oriented. The team colors are silver, blue, and black. During the six years there have been three uniform changes.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Beginning with only four squads in 2002, one peewee squad (ages eight and under),two youth squads (ages 11 and under), and a junior squad (ages 18 and under). In 2005-2006 season, NSS was comprised of six teams in five different divisions. Currently for the 2008-2009 competition season, NSS will take four teams to the stage: Youth Level One-Shinning Stars, Senior Open-Galaxy, Senior Level 5-Cosmos, and a new addition to the program this season, Special Needs-Super Stars.Over the six-year period, NSS has won thirty-nine national championships and in 2008 Cosmos received the entire program's first bid to The Worlds Competition, largest cheerleading competition in the world. Cosmos did not qualify for the second day of competition.

SPONSORS AND EXPENSES

The gym is sponsored by over 46 companies from all over the county. The cost to be on a all-star cheerleading team varies depending on what team, division, competitions, and how many competitions the teams go to. There are fundraisers the gym offers the cheerleaders to help raise money that is put towards their accounts to help pay for the cost of uniforms, travel expenses, and competition fees. Over the years the NSS teams have got to several instate and out of state competitions including Jamfest, Cheersport Nationals, Cheersport Regional’s, Americas Best, SOS, Athletic Championship and several more.

MOTTO

Each year the cheer changes just like the routines change and so does the motto. This year their motto is “Our Stars are Lighting the Universe”.
