Janet Roitman is an American
anthropologist known for her work inCentral Africa focusing on the borders ofCameroon ,Nigeria , theCentral African Republic , andChad . Her analysis of the unregulated commerce that transpires on those borders, "Fiscal Disobedience", which inquires into emergent forms of economic regulation in the region of the Chad Basin, was praised byArjun Appadurai as "an unusually innovative, indeed subversive anthropology of economy and state." New School for Social Research inNew York . She is a research fellow with theCentre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), a member of theInstitut Marcel-Mauss (CNRS-EHESS) inParis , and an instructor at the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques de Paris. Roitman is also a member of the Editorial Committee of the journal "Public Culture ". The recipient of many fellowships and grants, she is currently devising a collaborative project on “The Archeology of Violence in Central Africa.”Roitman received her doctorate from the
