This type of lake is known as a Artifical lake which means a lake created by flooding land behind a dam, called an impoundment or reservoir; by deliberate human excavation; or by the flooding of an excavation incident to a mineral-extraction operation such as an open pit mine or quarry. It was created to be a dam used to produce electricity for the surrounding areas. On November 1, 1974 the hydro plant started construction. The last part of construction ended on April 20, 1983; nine years later. There are two generating units that produce up to 67 megawatts of power for each unit. The lake happens to be on the upper part of the Tallapoosa River.
Recreation
There are many recreational attractions on Lake Wedowee such as: boating, swimming, fishing and camping. Fishing brings the most attraction to the lake. It is known to be one of the finest lakes in the Southeast because the quality of the water and it’s sizeable bass population. There are many different species of fish in the lake that include crappie, largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, hybrid striper, channel catfish, and flathead catfish.
Community
The city of Wedowee is a small town but when the lake came in it brought many people in to the community.Many people reside on the lake but some also just come for vacation throughout the year.
