Commissioner Tagami, helped spear head the protection of the beach by rallying his fellow commissioners. During a State Parks Commission meeting, Commissioner Tagami read:
"California state park lands are designated for their protection and preservation on behalf of futuregenerations and should not be used in a manner inconsistent with state park purposes. Californiastate parks provide significant economic benefit to the people of California, generating millions ofvisitors from around the world. Established in 1971, the state park at San Onofre beach is one ofthe top five most-visited parks and provides valuable upland habitat, coastal beaches, affordablecamping and unique habitat for 11 protected species, as threatened and/or endangered underfederal laws. The Foothill-Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency and Orange County hasproposed construction of a multi-lane highway, with an alignment extending approximately fourmiles through the inland portion of the park at its northern edge to its southern boundary, takingover 320 acres of state park land for a right-of-way and fragmenting and adversely affecting theremaining acreage of the park. The taking of this leased parkland asset would cause this park tosuffer diminution of its use and intended purpose.
Commissioner Tagami suggested that the Commission should request that the State of California and itsagencies take actions within their power to protect the state park resource at San Onofre State Beach, and that the Commission respectfully request that the Governor, in concert with the Attorney General’soffice, evaluate, and if merited, defend this state resource.
Later, Tagami and other State Commissioners were awarded the Golden Poppy for his efforts in saving San Onofre State Beach."
