At College Park Elementary, music is required course for the 4th-6th Grade students. Students in 4th Grade may choose between learning Beginning Strings(Cello, Viola, and Violin) or join Chorus. In 5th Grade, you may do Beginning Wind instruments (Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, etc.), Intermediate Strings, or Chorus. In 6th Grade you have Intermediate Wind Isntruments, Advanced Strings, or Chorus. You have 1 Spring Concert, where attendence is mandatory unless excused.
Music is held twice a week(Monday & Thursday), from 8:00 A.M. - 10:15 A.M. They are about 45 minutes long, 4th Graders being their lesson at 8:00 - 8:45; 5th Graders 8:45 - 9:30; 6th Graders 9:30 - 10:15.
Physical Education
At College Park, most classes have P.E. at least once a week, not to say more. For 1st Grade - 5th Grade there are no designated activites you must do. However, 5th Graders take California Physical Fitness Test that consist of 6 categories. The first category is Aerbic Capcity, where you are timed while running a mile. College Park would like all its students to at least finish within 12 minutes. The second Category is Body composition, where they take your height and weight. 14.9 - 24.5 are considered healthy body masses. The third category is Abdominal Strength, where Curl-ups are performed. The fourth Category is Trunk Extension Strength, where the Trunk Lift is performed. The Trunk lift is when your arms are at your side, and you then proceed to life your neck. The fifth category is Upper Body Strength, where push-ups determine it. The sixth and final category, is Flexibility. You must be able to reach your right had to your let hand behind your back, and vice-versa.
GATE Program
GATE stands for The Gifted and Talented Education Program. In order to be eligible for GATE, one must take the OLSAT's (Otis Lennon School Ability Test), and get a minimum of 95%. Students can be asked to take the test because of their States Test Scores or may take the test for a fee. GATE students are usually together with other GATE students, and GATE teachers are assigned.For 4th Grade, the assigned GATE teacher is Mandy Mashburn; 5th Grade is Rick Thompson, and 6th Grade is Johnnie Hunt.
Math Field Day
Math Field Days, are usually held on Saturdays, where schools/districts from all of South Orange County compete. At College Park a test is given to GATE Students or Advanced Math Students, and then teachers select 5 students.Once the 5 students are selected, they begin to go to Extra Math Classes, to train them for the Math Field Day. Although 5 students are selcted only 4 can go, the other one is an Alternate, in case a member is sick. The GATE teachers determine which 4 will go and which one wll become an alternate. The students do not know until the last 2-3 weeks before the Competition.
tudent Council
At College Park, 4th Graders - 6th Graders, may run for Student Council. 4th graders, may run for Historian, where they take pictures or they may run for Secretary. 5th graders may run for Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer. Where as 6th graders, amy run for President, Vice President, or Secretary.For Home Room Representatives, only those who attempted to be in office may be eligible. Teachers may each choose, or let their students pick.
The Student Council, votes for Spirit Days, Charity Drives, and cordinates the Student Store and Ice-Cream sales. The Student Store and Ice-Cream sales are held every Wednesday.
