Jeffrey W. Berger (1963 – January 25, 2001) was an inspirational vitreoretinal surgeon and engineer.

Training

Jeffrey W. Berger graduated in 1985 from Princeton University with a bachelors degree in engineering. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1996 and a fellowship in vitreoretinal disease at the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. He was on the faculty of the Scheie Eye Institute until his death in 2001. [Fine, 2001]

Accomplishments

During his short career, Dr. Berger was a pioneer of quantitative retinal imaging. He founded and directed the Computer Vision Laboratory at the Scheie Eye Institute. He was one of the first people to recognize the value of objective analysis of digital fundus images for research and clinical practice. [Kaiser et al, 2002] [Berger et al, 2000] He had numerous publications in both the ophthalmic and engineering literature on image analysis methods for fluorescein angiography. [Berger 1999] [Berger 1998] He developed a system for evaluating and standardizing images from patients participating in clinical trials. [Lee et al, 2000] [Shin et al, 1999] He also worked on eye tracking laser systems to provide more precise treatments to patients with various macular diseases. [Berger at el, 2001] [Asmuth et al, 2001] [Berger et al, 1999] [Berger et al, 1997] He was an expert on laser tissue interactions [Berger, 1997] [Berger et al, 1996] [Berger et al, 1988] as well as optical imaging and retinal diseases and was a principal investigator for the NEI-funded Complications of AMD Prevention Trial (CAPT). [Ying et al, 2008] [Maguire et al, 2008] In addition to his large clinical practice, Dr. Berger was Chief of the Retina Service at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center.

Death

Dr. Berger was diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma on January 12, 2001 after only a week-long illness. He died thirteen days later on January 25, 2001. He is survived by his wife Karen and children Adina, Tamar and Joseph. [Fine, 2001]

Legacy

In just 37 years, Jeffrey Berger was a pioneer in his field, a role model in his profession, an award-winning teacher in his department, and a loving husband and parent to his wife and children. His groundbreaking work was the first to apply so many recent advances in computer science and laid the foundation for the modern era of quantitative fundus imaging. Had he been able to continue his research, many of the questions that remain unsolved to this day might have been answered. Fortunately, his ideas and inspiration will live on in the knowledge that he has brought to this field. [Fine, 2001]
