Mahfouz continues to be an active volunteer in his community and is determined to improve the quality of life amongst his peers. Hence, Mahfouz is the main organizer of a Thanksgiving Dinner for the less fortunate in Ottawa held annually at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School. In his more than 20 years of service with his school board, Ed Mahfouz stunningly kept a perfect attendance record. [ [http://edmahfouz.liberal.ca Ed Mahfouz – A Message from Ed Mahfouz] ]

He is a published author and university graduate, earning a masters in Education from the University of Ottawa. [ [http://edmahfouz.liberal.ca Ed Mahfouz – A Message from Ed Mahfouz] ]

Mahfouz is facing off against Pierre Poilievre, current Conservative MP for Nepean-Carleton, noted for being an “attack dog” [ [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Poilievre Pierre Poilievre] ] of the Stephen Harper Conservative government. Poilievre is best known for attacks on the transsexual and Aboriginal communities. Poilievre was ordered by Prime Minister Stephen Harper [ [http://www.ctv.ca CTV News. Television Broadcast. Thursday, June 12, 2008. 11:00 PM ET] ] to apologize for his “racist” [ [http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/story.html?id=c36d0167-eef2-47e0-b34f-44bd961798b3 Area Tory's 'racist' remarks cloud apology] ] remarks on native peoples, as Poilievre had claimed falsehood as fact in saying that compensation being provided to residential school victims was $4 billion (it was in fact $1.9 billion) [ [http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/story.html?id=c36d0167-eef2-47e0-b34f-44bd961798b3 Area Tory's 'racist' remarks cloud apology] ] and said that Aboriginals instead need to learn “the values of hard work.” [ [http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/story.html?id=c36d0167-eef2-47e0-b34f-44bd961798b3 Area Tory's 'racist' remarks cloud apology] ] Prime Minister Stephen Harper was reported to have been furious with Poilievre over the diatribe, [ [http://www.ctv.ca CTV News. Television Broadcast. Thursday, June 12, 2008. 11:00 PM ET] ] which also angered his Conservative colleagues in the government caucus. Mahfouz is also running against Phil Brown [ [http://www.philbrown.info Phil Brown Campaign web site] ] of the NDP and Lori Gadzala of the Green Party.

A Wednesday October 8th editorial article in the Ottawa Citizen was extremely critical of Ed Mahfouz. They wrote: "Even dyed-in-the-wool Liberals should think twice before marking an X next to Ed Mahfouz. He seems like a nice guy, but he is not qualified to be a member of Parliament. Nearly every question put to him receives the same stock answer, as though someone had pulled a cord in his back: "That issue is very important to us ... I will raise your concern to the highest level in my party." The Liberals should be ashamed to have put him in this position." [ [http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/city/story.html?id=2ff6396b-7f1b-4ec4-aca7-9e0c5dcfebb1] ]

Mahfouz’s primary concerns surround education and the environment, and he is a big supporter of Stéphane Dion’s “Green Shift”, a bold plan that will cut income taxes, put a price on pollution, fight poverty and position Canada to be a leader in the 21st century global economy. The policy plan will cut taxes on those things we all want more of such as income, investment and innovation, and we will shift those taxes to what we all want less of: pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Ed has been married to Helen for 28 years, and they have one son, Talal. [ [http://edmahfouz.liberal.ca Ed Mahfouz – A Message from Ed Mahfouz] ]
