Portes (Aigina), Greece

Portes is a beautiful, picturesque fishing village located on the east side of Aegina. One of the natural beauties village is its large extent on the beach, with thick sand, round of the time and pebbles. The landscape is complete with the neat houses, with beautiful gardens, filled with flowers and grass, beside the blue sea. The inhabitants of the village live mainly on fishing and tourism. The authenticity of the landscape and the wild beauty affects the visitors. People return to this natural "paradise" for their vacation. Not without reason. The fresh fish taverns in the region, and clean beaches proverbial calm of the village are the best recipe for relaxing holidays.

The people are friendly in Portes and actively try to maintain the authenticity of the village. A village that has its own history and suffered major tests in the past. It is said that Portes had suffered so much from the rais of the pirate Barvarossa, that they built houses without windows, only with doors (portes or πόρτες in Greek). This is probably the origin of the name of the village. A second possible explanation is that the name Portes comes from the word porto (i.e. port) since the village has a port from which volcanic material, named Mafropetres, were loaded into ships that sailed to Crete.

Amateur fishermen will find Portes is a paradise! There are exceptional areas to the "Kavos Antoni". The area is also ideal for scuba diving and underwater fishing. But attention because most tracks there require high fitness and great experience.

The motorway ends at Portes . This means that you can not continue to drive the perimeter of Aegina, but you should go back from the road you came . The most common way to go to Portes is to take the path to the left, leaving Agia Marina and going for Alones (you will see there the relative plate). The same applies if you come from Alones, so turn right this time. You can also get off the road connecting with Anitsaio Portes . But because in one way or another, the path is fantastic, especially if you are on motorcycle and you want to do the tour, we suggest taking "exit" from Agia Marina towards the Alones, turn left on the road to the Portes. When you return to "exit" from the road connecting Portes to Anitsaio located in the village.
